Managing Director of Jazz Services Ltd (JSL) — a registered charity, core funded by the Arts Council of England with financial assistance from the Musicians' Union and the Performing Right Society Ltd to promote the growth and development of jazz in the UK by providing touring, education, information, publishing and communication services. Responsible for financial management, business planning, strategies and action programmes for the Company’s operations in: education, touring, information, marketing, sponsorship, publications, communications, advocacy and JSL’s subsidiary company, Jazz Newspapers, which publishes Jazz UK (which has the largest circulation of any jazz magazine in Europe).

Achievements
Successful sponsorship deals resulted in Schlitz Jazz Sounds 1986, televised by BBC2, National Jazz Month October 1987, three year sponsorship deal with Pimms 1988-1991. European Arts Festival funding for touring in 1992. Musicians’ Union and Performing Right Society funding for 1997-2003 for a scheme to help fund jazz promoters and musicians’ training seminars.

Instrumental in initiating the National Jazz Foundation Archive in 1987 and the Association of British Jazz Musicians in 1988.

At the first European Jazz Conference in 1991, I delivered a paper on the crucial need for jazz in Europe to share information. Appointed to the working party on the European Jazz Association.

In 1991 I developed a successful rescue plan for the survival of the Czech Jazz Society after reduction in support from the Czech Ministry of Culture.

In 1993 I wrote "Jazz: The Case for Better Investment" which spearheaded a campaign, undertaken by Jazz Services, for better levels of support for jazz, aimed at Parliament, funding bodies and opinion formers.

In 1994, with funding from the Musicians’ Union, I launched the campaign "Jazz on a Shoestring" that secured the support of 100 MPs on an Early Day Motion and achieved wide coverage in national and local press and media. In January 1996 I gave written and oral evidence on arts funding to the House of Commons Select Committee on National Heritage.

In June 1999 I gave written and oral evidence on the abolition of the Classical Music Subsidy, in favour of subsidy for all musics, at the Performing Right Society Limited to the House of Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport. Jazz Services acts as the Secretariat to the All Party Houses of Parliament Jazz Appreciation Group.

In 1995 I successfully secured Lottery capital funding (£18k) to computerise JSL's information database and in 1998 I successfully applied to the Arts Council of England’s Arts for Everyone Main Scheme for £90k to put JSL’s computerised information database on-line, Jazz UK on-line and the development of the Jazz in Education database on-line. I am currently assisting the Welsh Jazz Society and the Women's Jazz Archive in their three year business and strategy plan and in 1999 gave written and oral evidence to the National Assembly of Wales.

In June 1998 with Dr James Birkett I initiated the Jazz Research Network in conjunction with Newcastle University, Manchester University and Leeds College of Music.

In 1999 I secured funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to work with the Guildhall School of Music in assisting disadvantaged musicians with training, recording a CD and organising national touring.

My public relations role also includes a number of trustee directorships in organisations such as the Women's Jazz Archive, Jazz Newspapers Ltd, National Music Council of Great Britain and service on a variety of committees such as the Jazz Section of the Musicians' Union,Performing Right Society Ltd Advisorary Panel and I also contribute articles to a wide range of publications.

With Lazenby Education developed the first all music education website (www.musiced.org.uk).

In 2002 worked with the BBC, Yamaha and Associated Board to provide Cool Keys - a history of jazz piano aimed at schools.

Have recently been involved with a lottery application to upgrade The Jazz Site.

1991-1994 Chair of AST (Design Services) Ltd.
Appointed to Chair a managed workspace company based in Covent Garden that was in imminent danger of bankruptcy. Turned the company around by cutting costs, providing enhanced service to the tenants and refocusing the company's marketing and operational efforts away from single person enterprises towards larger organisations requiring greater floor areas. It is still in operation.

1968 — present Professional Musician
Moved to London in 1981 to pursue a trumpet-playing career. Toured the UK, Europe, with appearances at the Sacramento Jazz Festival (USA). Numerous TV and radio broadcasts. Completed a joint project with Max Brittain, the London Life Suite, funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain.

1978-1981 Welsh Jazz Society
The Welsh Jazz Festival was so successful that with the Festival Committee we set up the Welsh Jazz Society Ltd. I was appointed full-time Administrator in 1979. Responsibilities included general and financial management, fundraising and sponsorship, organising tours, setting up affiliated societies, marketing, PR and organising the Welsh Jazz Festival.

1974-1978 Welsh Jazz Festival
With Geoff Palser founded the Welsh Jazz Festival in 1974 and was responsible for the growth of the festival, artistic direction, raising funds and sponsorship, marketing, financial control and PR. My spare time was spent as a freelance trumpeter and bandleader. Made recordings for local radio, Radio 4, a television series for HTV and European tours with own band.

1972-1974 Research and Marketing Ltd
Started employment as a trainee marketing executive with Research and Marketing Ltd to gain commercial experience and, as a marketing executive, was involved with direct mail and with product launches in the HTV area.
